How do we know God exists?
The simple answer is that we cannot scientifically prove the existence of God, just as we cannot prove that he doesn’t exist.
We do believe though, that there is strong evidence of God’s reality. These evidences, coupled with our faith, have caused us to believe and follow Him.
Some of those evidences are:
- The universal belief throughout all societies of a supreme Being.
- The incredible order and design in nature which indicates an intelligent source.
- Human moral nature.
- The works of God in history - the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.
- God’s power in human experience - the transformation of lives.
These evidences are not proofs, but the cumulative significance is great.
Here’s another question, what is the alternative to a Creator God? Just that everything, including you and I, are a cosmic accident caused by nothing!
What is God like?
Here is one of the crunch issues. To many God is a sort of Father Christmas in the sky.
To others He is more like an ogre, ready to pounce on anyone who does wrong. To most God is a nebulous force that is out there somewhere but unreachable. The greatest aspect of God’s personality as far as we are concerned is this -God is personal. This is vital for us because it means we can know God and have a relationship with Him!
Other aspects of God’s nature are:
- God is spirit. He has no physical body.
- God is eternal. He’s always existed and always will.
- God is present everywhere.
- God is all-powerful.
- God knows all things.
- God is inherently good.
- God is by nature love, merciful, and just.
- God never changes.
- There is only one true God.
- God is expressed in three persons, (The Trinity) Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
What does God do?
It must get pretty boring sitting up there in the clouds all day....just what does God do?
- God creates. He made the physical universe out of nothing.
- God sustains His creation. Natural law operates under His direction.
- God rules over His creation.
- God speaks into the lives of those He created. (You and I!).
- God touches lives bringing pardon, peace, perspective, purpose and power.
- God is the ultimate Judge of all the earth.
What is a Christian?
First we need to make clear what a Christian isn’t.
- A Christian isn’t just someone born in a "Christian" country.
- A Christian isn’t just someone born to Christian parents.
- A Christian isn’t just someone who lives a moral life.
- A Christian isn’t just someone who does good deeds.
- A Christian isn’t just someone who prays, worships and studies the Bible!
These things may be good, admirable and even important, but they don’t make someone a Christian.
Christian literally means Christ’s ones. Hence a Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ. A person who has chosen to do that which Jesus said we needed to do to be a follower of His.
This means we have:
- Recognised our need for God.
- Repented (turned around) from the wrong in our lives.
- Put our faith in Jesus and hence received the gift of salvation from God.
This is done by the simple act of believing and choosing to follow Jesus Christ.
Our decision to make this step of repentance and faith may be expressed in a prayer something like this:
My Father in heaven, I recognise that my sin has separated me from You.
I want to turn from my sin, and I ask for Your forgiveness.
I believe Jesus Christ died for me, and I now place my faith in Him alone for my salvation.
Lord Jesus, I now receive You into my life as my Lord and Savior. Help me to live in obedience to Your word.
Thank you for answering this prayer.
Note: there is no standard to attain, no initiation rites, no financial cost, in fact, there are none of the things we often assume we need to do to be put right with God. All that is required is that we take that step of faith to trust and follow Jesus.
What Happens Now?
This simple prayer of faith means that this person is now a Christian, a follower of Jesus.
- We are forgiven, cleansed from our wrongdoing (sin).
- We are reconciled with God.
- Jesus indwells us through His Holy Spirit.
- We are made new spiritually.
- We receive eternal life!
Then What Happens?
If the decision to follow Jesus was a real one, then we will begin to live according to the teachings of Jesus. It will be our desire to read and obey the Bible and, most importantly, that we develop a relationship with Jesus Christ - not just calling ourselves a Christ follower, but living in close relationship with Him daily. To ensure we do this it is vital that we join a church family somewhere.
What About The Future?
It’s great!!
- We have the security of knowing we are in God’s hand.
(John 10:27-28).
- Jesus has promised to never leave us.
(Matthew 28:20).
- We have the prospect of discovering God’s purpose and plan for our lives.
(Ephesians 2:10).
- We enjoy the fulfilling experience of being used by God for the eternal blessing of others.
